Jane, Evonne, and Aaron drove from Pittsburgh to Cleveland for the second stop of our midwest trip in March 2022.  The object of our study at the Cleveland Museum of Art was the spectacular Bust of Innocent X cast by Domenico Guidi after a model by Alessandro Algardi. Why spend the time on a work outside of Bernini’s oeuvre? We include a discrete group of “comparanda” in our study, namely well-documented works cast by founders in Bernini’s milieu after models by other sculptors. Because there are so many bronze busts cast after Bernini’s models which are undocumented, we are especially interested in understanding the techniques specific to the casting of busts in this period. The Cleveland Innocent helped us to understand Guidi as a founder of busts.  We were able to learn as much as we did also because we had full access to the work in the luminous objects conservation lab of the CMA and thanks to the staff who moved this heavy work so that we could access interior spaces and the base, which is rather important in technical studies.
