Our second U.S. road-trip took us to the environs of New York City and the private collection of the late Michael Hall. We were hosted by Thomas Malmberg, Michael Hall’s partner, and Professor Jonathan Unglaub, who came down from Boston for the occasion. We had our hands full with the amazing opportunity to study two Matilda Statuettes (#s 3 and 4 of perhaps 12 casts that are extant) and two medallions of Clement X and Clement IX, apparently cast at the same time and with the same history of display. A third medallion of Gregory XV that appears to be from a series to which Bernini medallions pertain but was not modelled by Bernini, falls into our discrete category of comparanda.
