Technical Studies of Art

Visual Examination

The Visual Examination of the work is at the core of the study.

High Resolution Photography

Bernini’s bronzes are extensively and systematically photographed by Enrico Fontolan (Bibliotheca Hertziana) for the first time.

Computational Analysis of Multiple Data Sources

The project will generate a large amount of data in disparate forms. Data analysis, using machine learning and artificial intelligence, will be crucial In the interpretation of these huge, diverse datasets.

Structured Light 3D Scanning

We are making 3D digital models for all multiples (more than one cast made from a model) and some marble busts to see if they were made from the same model, to compare sizes, and to assess changes made in the wax inter-model stage.

Core Analysis: Petrographic and Compositional Analysis

Core material is the matter (clay, sand, etc.), of local materials, the part of the refractory mold used to create the inner void in a hollow bronze.

Bronze Analysis

The virtually uninvestigated composition of bronze alloys in 17th-century Rome is a key data point for our study. We use two techniques for these analyses: XRF and ICP-MS-MS.

Radiography

This technique enables us to visualize internal features of the works.
