The American Academy in Berlin on the Wannsee was the site of our first day of technical studies in Europe and Enrico’s first trip with the team. The object we were studying was a Clement X medallion from a private collection in Kraków and we are fortunate that Professor Józef Grabski, Director of the Institute for Art Historical Research based in Kraków, very generously agreed to bring the object to Berlin for technical studies.

This was our fourth Clement X and it aligned interestingly with the others we have studied. Like the Metropolitan Museum cast, we believe this medallion to have been cast in a two-part mold and we are thinking about the kinds of vestiges of indirect lost wax casting that can still be passed to the new cast from the model (bronze, plaster) impressed into the two-part mold.
