Our studies took a jump in scale at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where we had five exciting days in the European Sculpture Galleries and in the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts. As part of our effort to study works by documented founders in Bernini’s milieu we studied Melchiorre Cafà’s bust of Alexander VII and the bust of Innocent X, cast by Domenico Guidi after a model by Alessandro Algardi. We also had our first look at one of three casts of the idiosyncratic small bust of the Duke Orsini, our first look at one of five Neptunes and our first look at one of two casts of S. Agnese. We were hosted by curator and Bernini’s Bronzes Scientific Advisory Committee member Denise Allen, a collaboration that resulted in many productive discussions. We also had a cameo appearance of Philippe Malgouyres from the Louvre, whose work on the small bronzes after Bernini has been important to the project. A much-appreciated visit to Conservation with Linda Borsch, who was instrumental in organizing our studies, allowed us to meet the many colleagues on the MMA’s conservation team.
