The final destination of our first US road trip was the Princeton University Art Museum, where we studied a cast of the Cristo Vivo (Living Christ) the model for which was made for the altars of St. Peter’s in Rome. It appears that the work was cast in four pieces with Roman sleeve joints. One of the most intriguing aspects of the work was what appears to have been the use of pieces of actual textile for the garment around Christ’s waist, known as the perizoma, which has the look of plain weave linen. We were hosted that day by Bart Devolder, paintings conservator and we were joined by Carolina Mangone, Associate Professor in the Department of Art & Archaeology (and a former student of Evonne Levy).
