Jane and Evonne went to Houston’s Museum of Fine Arts on the second leg of the July U.S. trip where we studied our third Medallion of Clement IX. Lisa took the trip in August where she took XRF readings and cast her own eyes on the work. It’s pretty exciting to see these stacking up and by now we know what to look for. This cast aligned with our growing certainty about the two casting techniques—indirect lost wax casting and two-part mold casting—that were used to make these medallions. We took bets on the technique before we arrived. Jane won. We were hosted by the wonderful Per Knutås, Chair of Conservation, Associate Curator James Anno, and Silvia Russo in the bea-utiful Sarah Campbell Blaffer Foundation Center for Conservation and were grateful for the use of their Zeiss microscope for a very close-up view of the cold work.
